💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
When I was in college studying jazz, I really wanted to be able to improvise over jazz tunes and jam with my peers.
I often received advice like, "just keep playing your scales and arpeggios."
I was practicing my scales and arpeggios, but my improvisation didn’t sound expressive.
Over the years, I identified the missing link.
In this video, I guide you through a series of exercises on chord tone soloing.
The exercises are designed to help you bridge the gap between playing mechanically and finding your voice as an improvising musician.
I hope you enjoy this lesson about chord tone soloing and find it beneficial.
Let me know what you think in the comments.
Thanks! :)

Hi! First of all thanks for your lessons. Question: would omitting the 5th and adding the 6th not make the chord the 1st inversion of the relative minor tonic? I know it's kind of contextual, but at least in close position it gives the vibe of that minor tonic chord. In the other position it gives a vibe that is a bit different, given that it has a major 6th (root and the 6th), a major 3rd (over the octave from the root) and a perfect 5th (between the 6th and the 3rd over the octave). So, in the second case the interval of perfect 5th is not lost (not as the step of the chord, but at least it's kept as an interval), we have the 6th, so we get the vibe, thus preserving the vibe of the chord. But in close position it's just the minor tonic chord in the 1st inversion form. If we are in the band -- yes, someone would probably play the 5th, so in the context it would sound the way we want, but for solos, I think, the close position would not be the best choice. Best regards.

Excellent. I'm 73 (retired from my day gig as a software engineer), been playing 50+ years off and on. About 20 years ago I started taking some lessons after a down time for my other career and the music store where I went had us start a little band. So it ended up going for several years; not too many gigs or money, but some for sure. After that I started playing in a restaurant with a couple others. Soon thereafter, it was mostly me and an upright bass player. I didn't make a lot of money (it was not a high class restaurant), but I loved it. Did that for over ten years until the bass player had a stroke. When I retired, I moved to my current domain. Many places prefer to hire one person because its cheaper and they reclaim more space. But I didn't want to use backing tracks - that just seems like practicing. So I've been on a quest to learn solo guitar, which I've really enjoyed. Got a cert in Jazz composing and arranging from Berklee Online, a 4.0 in music from the local community college, etc. Just need a little boost to get out there, but with my experience, I know you are right. I remember one place I played, and between sets a guy starting walking up. I thought, "oh crap, he's going to remind me that I didn't sharp the 4th in the third measure of that song". Instead he said, "Is that a banjo or a geetar".

This looks/sounds really great, but I've been struggling with a plateau for a long time--looking to regain my confidence--and have questions... Some of the chords are hidden by the UA-cam controls overlay. Are these arpeggios each in the key of the respective chord? Is there a long version of this video?

I'm really not trying to bust balls, video says easy way to learn. You literally switched from numbers to letters and still named them, but... noW* you have no clue which comes next because the letters aren't even in any order, you could have just taught whatever in firm 1,2,3 et. So we knew which form was next in line to go up the neck

I'm loving the direction these videos are going in - the more Jazz Soloing, the better! I wonder if you would consider doing a similar vide/guide on 'Jazz Lines over every chord / Progression'. I'd love to see a video where you give maybe 2 or 3 examples of a standard/typical Jazz line that you could play over each chord type - like ... "Lines over the I Maj7 or the IV Major 7 or the Dom II chord' ? and then linking them together to form common progressions - Maj and Minor ii-V-I and Rhythm Changes ?

a comment: usually in discussions of what to play over dominant 7th chords, there is a distinction made between chords that resolve up a 4th (use mixolydian) and those that don't resolve up a 4th (use lydian dominant). So, for example, E7 to A use E mixolydian, while Bb7 to A use Bb lydian dominant. another comment: great work on this, thanks!

I love these 'ultimate guide' videos - I regularly refer to your Shell Chord video. I wonder if you would consider doing a similar guide on 'Jazz/Blues Lines over every chord / Progression'. I'd love to see a video where you give maybe 2 or 3 examples of a standard/typical Jazz line that you could play over each chord type - Dom, Minor7, Major7, m7b5 etc. Or Maybe the Roman Numeral might be better "Line over the I Maj7 or the IV Major 7 or the Dom II chord' ? And then section 2 of the video could be 'standard' Jazz lines that work over the most common chord progressions: Major ii-V-I, Minor ii-V-I, Rhythm Changes etc. Might be asking a bit much, but I think a lot of people (me included) would find it useful to have a set of lines to start to use over every chord/progression in a Standard, which can then be adapted / manipulated. At the very least it would get me on the right road.
